About the Da Subject Matter Website
WHO IS AN ADOLESCENT, A YOUTH, OR A YOUNG PERSON?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an adolescent is any person between the ages of 10 and 19. The age group can be subdivided into two periods: Early Adolescence (between 10 –14 years), and Late Adolescence (between 15 – 19 years). ‘A Youth is any person between the ages of 15 - 24 years, and young people/persons are between 10 and 24 years.
The Nigerian National Youth Policy defines ‘‘A Youth’’ as any person between the ages 18 – 35.
WHAT IS ADOLESCENCE?
Adolescence is a period of transition between childhood and adulthood: it is a period in which 'although no longer considered a child, the young person is not considered an adult either'.
THE RATIONALE FOR "DA SUBJECT MATTER"
Adolescents and young people experience a range of unique barriers to health services and information. They exhibit a myriad of problems at different stages of their social, economic, physiological and psychological development. Transition to adulthood often involves periods of stress, experimentation and disorganisation.
"Da Subject Matter" is designed to reach youths where they are with the information they need to make healthy decisions. It offers exclusive details and increases access to:
- Medically accurate, culturally sensitive, context specific, and appropriate sexual and reproductive health information
- Referrals to youth-friendly clinics (“Find a health centre”)
This platform is aimed at promoting the health and wellbeing of adolescents and other young people in line with the Nigerian National Adolescent & Youth Health Policy.
